EU VAT Number is a WooCommerce tax extension that adds a VAT number field to your checkout and validates the number in real time. Validation runs against the European Commission's VIES (VAT Information Exchange System), so you can confirm a customer's VAT number is genuine before their order is placed. You can customize the field label and description to suit your store.
Yes. When a customer enters a VAT number that validates successfully through VIES, EU VAT Number can apply the VAT exemption automatically at checkout, so eligible businesses are not charged VAT. You stay in control of the rules, including whether to still charge VAT for businesses in your own base country.
It is well suited to B2B stores. EU VAT Number includes an "Enable B2B Transactions" setting that requires customers to enter a VAT number at checkout, which is useful if you sell purely to businesses. Validated numbers can trigger automatic VAT exemption, and you can review collected VAT details on each order.
You decide how the extension responds. The "Failed Validation Handling" setting lets you reject the order and show an error, accept the order without removing VAT, or accept the order and remove VAT as normal. This gives you flexibility to match your own tax and compliance approach.
No. Customers located outside the EU are out of scope for EU VAT, so the VAT fields are not shown to them. This keeps your checkout clean and relevant for buyers who do not need to provide a VAT number.
Yes. EU VAT Number is designed to help with the EU VAT requirements for digital (non-shippable, virtual) products. For B2C digital sales it can validate the customer's IP address against their billing country and collect self-declared location evidence when the two do not match, storing that evidence on the order. You will need to set up your EU VAT rates for digital products in WooCommerce so the correct tax is applied.
It gives you tools to review your EU VAT data. EU VAT Number adds two reports under WooCommerce > Reports > Taxes: an EC Sales List that groups B2B order amounts by country and VAT number, and an EU VAT by State report that shows taxes collected and order amounts by country. Each report includes preset ranges so you can view data by quarter. These reports are for your own review and are not a substitute for advice from a tax professional.
Validation uses the European Commission's VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) through the WooCommerce VAT number validation service. VIES is the official EU source for checking whether a VAT number is registered and active, which helps you apply exemptions with confidence.
Yes. EU VAT Number handles collecting and validating VAT numbers and applying exemptions, but your standard and digital VAT rates still need to be configured in WooCommerce under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. For digital goods in particular, you will input the relevant EU VAT rates so the correct tax is charged where an exemption does not apply.
It is best for WooCommerce stores that sell to EU-based businesses or sell digital goods to EU customers and need to collect, validate, and record VAT numbers at checkout. It is especially useful for B2B stores that want to apply reverse-charge style VAT exemptions automatically, and for merchants who want quarterly EU VAT reports to support their record keeping.
EU VAT Number is focused on collecting and validating EU VAT numbers at checkout, applying exemptions for eligible businesses, and handling EU VAT rules for digital goods. If you also need to comply with the EU's Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) regime for goods imported into the EU, including removing VAT on higher-value consignments and preparing the monthly IOSS VAT return, WooCommerce offers a separate IOSS EU VAT for WooCommerce extension built for that use case.
No. Due to recent HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) VAT API changes, this extension can no longer validate UK VAT numbers. HMRC now requires each merchant to register an API key, which this extension does not currently support. If your store trades with UK businesses, this limitation is important to consider before purchasing.
Yes. EU VAT Number works with both the classic shortcode checkout and the newer WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks, so the VAT number field and validation appear wherever your store collects checkout details. It is also compatible with High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS).
